The Association of Tourist Boat Operators and Water Transport of Nigeria has affected plans to ease the movement of passengers through the waterways by constructing barges that will be able to carry three or more vehicles across the water in Lagos.
According to the group, this was done in response to the traffic challenges in and out of Lagos.
The National President, ATBOWATON, Mr. Ganiyu Balogun, was quoted in an interview with Shipping Position as saying that the idea of moving vehicles in barges across the water was born about 10 years ago.
He revealed that he had been in the practice of moving vehicles in barges across the water for a decade.
“I move cars from Victoria Island to Ikorodu and other places, starting with a barge that carried six cars before upgrading to 10-vehicles-carrier barge.
Balogun said they moved people who had no patience to stay in traffic for too long.
According to him, the barges currently move 200 to 300 vehicles a day, adding that they could move the people and their cars to their destinations in less than 10 minutes.
Balogun added that he was building a barge that could carry more than 30 vehicles at once.

The Director-General, Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Mr. Muda Yusuf, said the idea of moving cargoes in barges was a welcome development, especially in a traffic prone environment like Lagos.
He said with the Apapa road practically closed to traffic due to the ongoing rehabilitation, the most practical solution would be deploying barges to move cargoes along the waterways.
