After 15 Years in Operation Abuja Airport Set for NCAA Safety Certification

Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport Abuja

Abuja – Indications have emerged that the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja will get safety and security certification from the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority before the end of this week, a very competent source close to the regulatory organization has said.

The certification is coming about 15 years after the airport was opened for operations. The airport was built in 2000 and opened for operations in 2002.

The source who is close to NCAA said that the certification process began in 2014 and that the regulatory authority had given the airport a pass mark in security, safety and equipment, which would enable it to be certified.

The NCAA was said to be satisfied with the several manuals submitted to its inspectors by the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria, operator of the airport.

The source added, “There are five stages involved in airport certification. The fifth stage is the presentation of a certificate to the management of FAAN, which is slated for this week.

“With the successful certification, Abuja will now be the second airport in the country to be certified by the authority. The Murtala Muhammed Airport, Lagos was the first to be certified by the NCAA in September.”

Airport certification is one of the requirements by the regulators, the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) and Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority.

It is also one of the critical safety targets set by the Abuja Ministerial Declaration of July 2012 that mandated all African states to certify their international airports.
