H<\/span>omeowners,<\/strong> take comfort: Even the appliances on Air Force One break down.<\/span><\/p>\n

More than a quarter-century after they were installed, two of the refrigerators on the president\u2019s plane need to be upgraded, and these specially designed \u201cchillers\u201d aren\u2019t cheap.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Boeing Company was awarded a nearly $24 million contract in December to engineer the refrigerators for Air Force One, the Defense Department\u00a0said<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

The two units being replaced came with the aircraft in 1990 and are no longer able \u201cto effectively support mission requirements for food storage,\u201d the Air Force said in a statement on Saturday.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe units were based on the technology at the time and designed for short-term food storage,\u201d the statement said. \u201cAlthough serviced on a regular basis, reliability has decreased with failures increasing.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

Perhaps in anticipation of taxpayer sticker shock, the Air Force also said \u201cthe engineering required to design, manufacture, conduct environmental testing and obtain Federal Aviation Administration certification\u201d were all included in the cost.<\/span><\/p>\n

The contract \u2014 for $23,657,671 \u2014 says that work on the units is expected to be completed by Oct. 30, 2019.<\/span><\/p>\n

Air Force One must be able to feed passengers and crew for weeks without resupplying, according to the news website\u00a0Defense One<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

According to the site, that would require storing about 3,000 meals in huge refrigerators and freezers below the passenger cabin.<\/span><\/p>\n

Two galleys can provide up to 100 meals at one sitting, according to\u00a0the Air Force<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Although the new units will use \u201cavailable industry technology,\u201d the Air Force said they would be uniquely capable of providing about 70 cubic feet of temperature-controlled storage \u2014 enough space to ensure crews will not have to restock them for \u201can extended period of time.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The Defense Department did not respond to a request for comment on Saturday night, and a Boeing spokesman referred questions to the Air Force.<\/span><\/p>\n

President Trump has previously criticized the costs associated with the plane.<\/span><\/p>\n

In December 2016, about a month before his inauguration,\u00a0he complained of the expense in a Twitter post\u00a0<\/a>that \u201cBoeing is building a brand new 747 Air Force One for future presidents, but costs are out of control, more than $4 billion.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cCancel order!\u201d he wrote.<\/span><\/p>\n

He later\u00a0told reporters<\/a>\u00a0that he thought the costs were \u201cridiculous.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI think Boeing is doing a little bit of a number,\u201d he said. \u201cWe want Boeing to make a lot of money, but not that much money.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Although the White House press secretary for President Barack Obama at that time, Josh Earnest, questioned the accuracy of Mr. Trump\u2019s estimate,\u00a0Air Force<\/a>\u00a0officials said they were proposing to spend $2.7 billion for research and development and planned eventually to buy two 747-8 aircraft, which normally cost airlines $350 million to $400 million apiece.<\/span><\/p>\n
