Lagos shuts down logistics for Saturday LG election

….Restriction to last for 8 hours

Nigeria.  The Government of Lagos State of Nigeria on Sunday announced that it will restrict movement of persons in the state for 6 hours for its local government election, holding on July 22, 2017, from 7 am to 2 pm. The State’s Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr. Steve Ayorinde, disclosed this in a press release. But another announcement came from him Wednesday, shifting the period to 8 hours, from 7 am to 3 pm.

The reason given was to allow for a smooth conduct of the local government elections and unhindered participation by the duly registered electorate.

However, the restriction which will affect mostly vehicular movement has forced delivery companies to suspend operations throughout Lagos on that Saturday as vehicle movement will not be allowed inside the state.

Our correspondents contacted some courier and e-commerce fulfillment firms who confirmed this development and stating that they have placed their customers on notice. Similarly, activities at the airports, seaports and motor parks in Lagos will be shut down during the period of restriction.

Those usually exempted from such restriction of movements are security agents, electoral officials on duty and those on essential duties like doctors, ambulances and fire fighters.

According to Ayorinde, the state government and security agencies will leave no stone unturned in ensuring a free and fair election, while ensuring the safety of electoral officials and voters.

The commissioner also urged residents to be peaceful and orderly in casting and protecting their votes in their respective wards for chairmen and councillors who are expected to drive development at the third tier of government.

Ayorinde explained that as the election that would bring on board a new set of public officers for the next four years at the local government level, the restriction of movement will allow the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC) and the security agencies to distribute electoral materials in good time and ensure a seamless electoral process.

“The police and other security agencies have been maintaining law and order since the commencement of campaign by political parties. They are poised to ensure that the voting on Saturday is conducted smoothly without public disturbance,” he said.

He added that all political parties, candidates, and their supporters, as well as the general public, are assured of safety throughout the period of voting and collation.
