Kenya’s new roads of 350km to be ready by December

The Principal Secretary says the construction of the missing link connecting the Nairobi-Naivasha highway to the Northern Bypass around Ruaka will start soon. According to him “We are going to complete the new roads by December this year in the first phase of the road annuity program,” says Infrastructure Principal Secretary John Mosonik.

In phase one of the annuity road model, the government plans to construct 2,000 kilometers of road in a plan to expand the tarmacked road network in Kenya.

The program which originally targeted to put up 10,000 kilometers of road was capped to 2,000 kilometers after the government failed to agree with contractors and financiers.

Mosonik says through public funds and development partners 350 kilometers of new roads will be completed by December this year.

Some of the projects include the dualing of Ngong Road, expansion of Outer Ring Road in Nairobi, the ongoing dualing of Changamwe highway in Mombasa and the Meru bypass.

The PS says the expansion of Outer Ring Road is 90 percent complete and will be open to traffic next month, while phase one of Ngong road from the National Library to Yaya Center mall will be completed in November this year.

Phase 2 of the Ngong road that stretches from Yaya Center to the Junction Mall will begin soon after the government received funding from Japan.

The projects to be completed by December 2017, are being implemented by the Kenya National Highways Authority (Kenha), Kenya Urban Roads Authority (Kura) and Kenya Rural Roads Authority Kerra.
