Heavy rains damage Kenya’s Kainuk Bridge, Make Kitale-Lodwar-Nadapal Road impassable

Turkana County-Kainuk Bridge

Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has declared Kainuk Bridge along the Kitale – Lodwar – Nadapal road unsafe for use by motorists and members of the public.

This follows heavy rains in the North Western part of the Country and comes after 16 passengers were rescued after their bus was swept away by floods in the area. The ill-fated bus stalled after the driver attempted to force his way through the flash flooded road before it overturned.

Panicked passengers had to climb out through the windows to seek refuge on top of the bus before they were rescued by security agencies and the Kenya Red Cross officials. The flash floods have affected businesses in Turkana and the nearby towns, effectively curtailing any movement and economic activity in the area.

The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has since issued an urgent public advisory to all motorists and members of the public to avoid the road terming it a risk to human life.

Kenha says due to heavy rains pounding the North Western part of Kenya, the road which serves as a crucial link between Marich Pass and Lokichar, along the Kitale – Lodwar – Nadapal road, is severely damaged and called on motorists to be patient as the Authority seeks to address the situation.
