The Federal Government has set in motion machinery for the establishment of inland container ports, at various state locations, to help prolong lifespan of highways over pressed by frequent haulage activities orchestrated by trailers, Lorries and heavy-duty trucks.

This was disclosed in Abuja by the president of National Freight Haulers Association (NFHA), Chief Jackson Bent, when he paid a consultative visit to the chairman of Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC), Adamu Candido.

These Ports would enhance decongestion, competitiveness and effectiveness of the haulage industry and also help to save valuable man-hour and promote productivity.

The NFHA president disclosed that the association is presently working to make freight haulage and transport system more modern, efficient, safe, affordable and environmentally sensitive. According to him, He said: “Ours is goods only and there should be no clash between NFHA, NURTW, NARTO and transport employers association. “As operators, we wish to urge that you, as regulator, may kindly arbitrate to restore order for the good of the system and for the purpose of improved needful synergy

“Today’s very important interactive session is, therefore, to serve as a platform for impacting positively on the affairs of the AMAC to meet growing challenges. This is in keeping with our determination to foster unity, honesty and service in our endeavour to give more to our country.

“You will recall that the government desires that cargo airports be established for some states, including the FCT and the successful operation and management of such begins with a thorough understanding of our professional competence and preparedness for meaningful partnership.

“We are aware your administration has indicated desire to collaborate with freight haulers and other transport operators to introduce regular measures designed to arrest anti-competitive behaviours of operators.

“Concerned that government, including your administration, is interested in synergy, NFHA has decided to embark upon similar purposeful dialogue and constructive engagement with other agencies to support and encourage beneficial formulation and implementation of policies to salvage our regional economy.”
