—-Role of Concession in Transportation Sector

The Federal Government of Nigeria has been urged to concession the scanning service at the nation’s port for efficient and effective cargo clearance.
In a bid to address the debilitating infrastructural challenge in the industry and also to make the Port System more efficient, concessioning remains the most practicable options available to the Federal Government.

The current economic reality makes it clear to everyone that the Federal Government cannot solely address the infrastructural deficit in the country’s transportation sector. This negatively affects service delivery and ultimately, its contribution to the economy. Stakeholders believe this is the right time for the government to concession critical infrastructure in the sector, especially at the seaports.

Moov Logistics News gathered also that scanning service is currently being handled by the Nigerian Customs Service, NCS. However due to the bad conditions of the scanners, which are either completely broken down or functioning below installed capacity, it has resulted to a hundred percent examination of cargoes by the customs service and other agencies, leading to delay in service delivery, a situation smugglers are taking advantage of. This is fueling the outcry of stakeholders that government should deepen the involvement of the private sector in the country’s maritme industry.
